It is important to keep safety in mind when traveling to any unfamiliar area, whether at home or abroad. Mexico is certainly not an exception. While the level of instability has increased in Mexico in the past few years, the problems have remained localized. The Riviera Nayarit area has remained secure. Due to the high level of tourism in this area, the Mexican Government works diligently to maintain safety in this region. Also, Americans and Canadians are not often targeted. Most of the conflict is between the Mexican cartel and the Mexican law enforcement. Though they are a matter of concern, the hotspots for violence are far away from our area.
US Department of State Travel Advisory from April 2011 says: “Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year, including more than 150,000 who cross the border every day for study, tourism or business and at least one million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico. The Mexican government makes a considerable effort to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist destinations. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region.”
Teams who visit La Fuente Riviera are strongly encourages to stay in groups and to limit their activity at night. These are just precautionary measures. Neither the pastoral staff nor any of the teams we have hosted have ever had a safety incident. The crime rate in this area is fairly low. Crime rates are comparable to the US and lower than many US cities. We are available to answer any safety questions you might have via email ( This email address is being protected from spambots.
